Balian, Breath, and the Rhythm of the Ocean

Balian, Breath, and the Rhythm of the Ocean

There are places where surfing is not just a sport.
It is a way of listening.
Balian is one of them.
Known quietly as one of Bali’s surf towns, Balian moves at the pace of the tide. Mornings begin with boards under arms, sandy feet, and the first light touching the river mouth. The ocean is always present here — not loud, not performative, but steady. A daily reminder that nature has its own rhythm, and that we are invited to meet it, not control it.
For surfers, this relationship with the ocean is intimate. Every paddle out asks for presence. Every set asks for patience. Every wave asks for trust.
And beneath all of it, there is one simple thing that connects body, mind, and sea:
The breath.

The breath as a surf practice

In the water, breath becomes more than something automatic. It becomes a tool.
It can turn fatigue into energy.
Stress into focus.
Fear into calm confidence.
This is the essence behind breathwork for surfers: learning how to use the breath to support physical performance, mental clarity, recovery, and emotional regulation — both in the ocean and outside of it.
When the surf is gentle, breath helps us stay connected and fluid.
When the conditions become more challenging, breath helps us stay calm, clear, and present.
A strong breath practice can support surfers in many ways: improving oxygen efficiency, building stamina, recovering faster between sets, increasing comfort with breath holds, and developing the inner steadiness needed when the ocean becomes powerful.
But perhaps the most beautiful part is that breathwork does not only change how we surf.
It changes how we meet life.

From hold-downs to everyday stress

Every surfer knows the feeling of being held underwater for a little longer than expected. In that moment, the body wants to react. The mind wants to panic. The breath becomes the bridge back to calm.
Breathwork trains this bridge.
Through foundational breathing, diaphragmatic awareness, breath holds, CO₂ tolerance, recovery techniques, and pre-surf breathing practices, surfers can learn how to regulate their nervous system before, during, and after time in the water.
This kind of training is not only for advanced or big-wave surfers. It is useful for anyone who wants to feel more confident in the ocean — from beginners learning to paddle out, to experienced surfers preparing for bigger conditions.
The practice begins on land.
On a mat, on the beach, in a quiet space.
No ocean needed. No special equipment. Just the body, the breath, and the willingness to listen.

Before entering the water

A simple breath practice before surfing can help prepare the body and mind. It can bring awareness into the lungs, soften unnecessary tension, and create a sense of grounded energy before paddling out.
Before your next surf, try this:
Sit or stand somewhere quiet.
Inhale slowly through the nose.
Let the breath move low into the belly, then into the ribs, then into the chest.
Exhale slowly and completely.
Repeat for a few minutes.
Feel the body arrive.
Feel the mind settle.
Feel the ocean before you enter it.
Surfing begins before the first wave.

The ocean as teacher

The ocean teaches us rhythm, patience, humility, and joy.
Some days we paddle out full of energy.
Some days we simply watch.
Some days the sea gives us everything.
Some days it asks us to wait.
Breathwork helps us stay present through all of it.
Because the real practice is not only catching more waves.
It is learning how to stay open, calm, and alive inside the experience.
In Balian, this feels especially clear.
Here, between river and ocean, jungle and black sand, movement and stillness, the breath becomes a way back — to the body, to the moment, to the quiet joy of being in the water.
Expand your breath.
Expand your stoke.
Let the ocean do the rest.
