Interview with Ziva Yoga – Hosting a Yoga Retreat at Yama Balian
1. Can you tell us a little about your personal journey and what led you to guide retreats?
Yihan and I used to work regular nine-to-fives, but we left our corporate jobs because it was taking a toll on our souls. When we started our studio Ziva Yoga over a decade ago, we wanted to create a place for people to reconnect with the most precious parts of themselves. Since then, we’ve grown our offerings to include workshops, events, trainings, and yoga retreats.
2. What is the core intention behind your retreats?
Our retreats focus on core yogic teachings presented in a meaningful, contemporary way. We use simple, authentic techniques to help participants release stress and create space for their most soulful qualities to expand.
3. Who are your retreats designed for — and what do you hope participants take away?
Our retreats are designed for anyone leading a stressful life—which these days is almost everyone. We hope participants find a sense of inner ease and remember their natural, inherent beauty.
4. How did you first hear about Yama Balian?
On Instagram! A yoga teacher Yihan follows, @_melissa_mai, hosted a retreat there. We immediately felt it looked like the perfect setting for a yoga retreat.
5. Why choose Balian over places like Ubud or Canggu?
We’ve led retreats in Ubud before but found it a bit too busy. Canggu is even more hectic. Balian offers a quieter, more authentic Balinese experience with just the right amount of comfort and charm.
6. What made you choose Yama Balian for your yoga retreat?
We loved the intimate setup, the peaceful village setting, and the beautiful shala. The fair pricing and the supportive energy of the space and team sealed the decision.
7. How would you describe the energy of Yama Balian?
Elegant and kind. As soon as we arrive, a deep sense of calm sets in. Time slows down at Yama Balian—it feels like a sanctuary where you can truly recenter.
8. What were your favorite elements of the retreat venue?
The river and the team. The river carries a strong yet gentle energy, while the Yama team is warm, dignified, and incredibly supportive.
9. Any especially powerful or memorable moments from your retreat?
The Melukat ceremony always stands out. It’s a powerful reset for our guests. Our closing satsangs are also deeply emotional, and the venue plays a huge role in that unfolding.
10. How did your group respond to the environment at Yama Balian?
They’re always blown away—by the views, the stylish rooms, the peace of the village. It feels like discovering a hidden gem, tucked away in nature.
11. How was your experience with the Yama Balian team?
Excellent. Communication is smooth, support is constant, and they really understand what retreat leaders need.
12. What advice would you give to future retreat leaders at Yama Balian?
If you’re looking for parties or shopping, this may not be your spot. But if you’re creating space for inner work and stillness, Yama Balian is perfect. Leave time in your itinerary to simply be.
13. Where can people find out more about your work and next retreats?
You can visit our website www.zivayoga.com.sg or follow us on Instagram @zivayogasg.
14. Lastly, how would you describe your time at Yama Balian in one sentence?
A little slice of heaven.
At Yama Balian, we take pride in creating a space that inspires rest, renewal, and deep connection. We are grateful to host Ziva Yoga’s retreats and invite other leaders to experience the magic of hosting a yoga retreat at Yama Balian. Come feel it for yourself.
